Growth - Just recently I was reading the headlines in Canada and realized that Alberta is again the strongest province in Canada. This year the growth will be 3.8% according to the RBC forecast and next year will be higher.

Jobs - In the last three months over 60,000 have been hired in the oil industry, which of course means people are going back to work, earning and spending money, which will probably put another 60,000 people back to work.

Private Sector - In Alberta the Government is less prone to control and stifle private companies with all kinds of legislation and stumbling blocks that other provinces and States like British Columbia and California which inhibits business starts and growth, which is why the private sector bounces back so quickly in Alberta after a worldwide economic downturn.

Cash Flow vs Leaverage

In a down market “Cash flow” is the only thing that counts

I remember when leverage was the key to success in business and investment. Today is not the time for leverage investment. You have to wait for the up market. This is the time to concentrate on cash flow. Hang by your teeth, watch every penny, cut back on our costs and we will win.

There will come a time when we can think of leverage again when investing in property and real estate. Watch the trend, make sure it is not just a blip, and as we see the steady turn around, then and not until till then is it time to start investing again in property.

Bust and Boom Economies

Downtimes are inevitable. We must learn from history that economies are cyclical. Over the last hundred years there are economic good times followed by recessions or depressions.

So how do we protect ourselves against downturn losses? Do not invest what you cannot affort to lose. Do not leverage you revenue producting property higher than your incoming cash flow. Do not expand your business at the peak of the ecomony just before the next downturn. Always keep a nest egg of capital at your disposal.

Try to own and operate businesses in areas of the country that have economic strength. Try to get away from fighting the uphill current of stagnent economic situation. Sometimes you just cannot overcome a local bad economy that resists growth. Take a look at the big picture and see what is happening around you.

Giving up is not an option.

Losing a business is heart breaking. Believe me I know what it feels like. I had the experience of having a bank call my loans in 1986 and lost everything. Giving up was not an option then and is not an option now. With the right kind of help I was able to start again and move on to have a successful business operation.

Not all Businesses are profitable.

* Most businesses have had downturns in their profits, especially in economic downturns.

* Almost every business operating with a net loss can be turned into a net profit.

* As assessment must be made to determine the reason for the loss before proceeding.

* The losses can occur through inside company problems or through external situations.

* Once the source is determined then the plan to turn the cash flows around can begin.

Red Ink in Business can be corrected.

* There are many ways to deal with business losses and many people available to help turn a company around.

* We must analyse if sales are down, or costs are up, or production is inefficient, or stock is shrinking and if the problem is internal or external.

* The next step is to put in place the changes to turn this situation around if the problem is internal.

* If the problem is external or to serious to turn around then an approach of selling, partnering or amalgamating may be the answer.
